2019 Notes From Artists Dennis Eavenson And Sharon Eavenson On The Card Suit Collection1

Suit designations are essential to the activity of most playing card games. They are reflective of social ranking within larger
societies and symbolize the different attributes of competing political groups. A spade symbolizes weaponry and hints at
military strength while a diamond, with it's rarity and beauty, is the natural gemstone to choose for wealth based societies.
Hearts are symbols of brotherly love and promote compassion and understanding when setting up governments while the
club, with it's tree like shape, designates strength from both land holdings, agriculture and community strength.

When considering societies and past civilizations that have dominated the human playing field, we see all these different
groups with their varied platforms and assets striving to achieve position of dominance for survival. These artworks are visual
studies designed to prompt contemplation about directions and outcomes for the human race based on human behavior
instincts for survival and the reflection of this need seen in popular playing card games and design.
